Science Diplomacy

Science Diplomacy has several definitions, but for the most part, they refer to the reliance on scientific advice and scientific communication. Science Diplomacy is increasingly useful in tackling the urgent and complex challenges that all societies face. Two examples of the challenges that science diplomacy can help with include COVID-19 and Global Warming.

As global challenges require coordinated international efforts, these challenges become central to foreign policy. In addition to diplomatic skills scientific expertise, coordinated efforts and scientific communication are essential. The exact titles of the occupations that include scientific diplomacy are varied but include scientific advisors and scientific officers at government press briefings.

The European Union’s vision, key benefits and principles for science diplomacy are presented in the Madrid Declaration. See this link for a summary of the Madrid Declaration (https://www.s4d4c.eu/s4d4c-1st-global-meeting/the-madrid-declaration-on-science-diplomacy/).
